Workplace Violence In January 1997, a man drove into the parking lot of a major company in Baltimore County, pulled out a gun, and aimed it at his girlfriend who was sitting in her car and killed her. The man shot himself. Several days after that, another man in another part of the county, in attempt to commit suicide, drove his vehicle the wall of a business and injured an employee who was sitting at his desk. (National, 1996) There is a general perception that violence is growing in our society. Almost everyday we can turn on the news or read the newspaper and we hear stories about horrific workplace murders and assaults. Employees not only deserve a safe work environment several states mandate it. Labor attorneys recognize that employers may be exposing their corporations to potentially costly litigation if there is no Workplace Violence Prevention Program and executives are being made aware of the enormous costs associated with incidents involving occupational violence. (California, 1995) Many questions deserve closer examination: What is work-place violence and who perpetrates it? What are the causes? Why the increase in workplace related violence? How does an incident involving occupational violence affect a business economically? And what can be done to avoid violence in the workplace? What is workplace violence? The workplace is any place a worker performs a job, such as an office, hospital, parking lot, private residence or public building. Violence is defined as any act of aggression that causes physical or emotional harm, such as physical assault, rape, verbal abuse, threats and even sexual harassment. Type of assault would include pinching, biting, hitting, grabbing, kicking, or being struck by a weapon. Almost any object can be used as a weapon. The causes of workplace violence are complex, however a few major factors are: †¢ Violent Society- We lives in a violent society.
